Why is yoga so beneficial for teenagers?

■ BRAIN BENEFITS

• Lowers Stress: Slow breathing flips the switch on your parasympathetic nervous system, instantly

turning off the high-alert 'fight or flight' alarm.

Goodbye, dramatic stress breakouts!"

• Shrinks the Amygdala: Yoga literally downsizes your brain's fear and panic control center, making daily drama feel like minor static noise.

■ "expanding my total zen zone!"

• Grows the Prefrontal Cortex: Breathwork thickens the brain area responsible for ultimate focus,

enhanced, calmer decision-making, and resisting chaotic impulses.

STUDY & FOCUS BENEFITS

• Sharpens Attention: Deep mindful breathing clears out mental cache and background lag, radically

optimizing your operational working memory.

■ "Laser focus: ON. Scrolling TikTok for hours: Defeated!"

• Better Grades: Research confirms students hitting the yoga mat 2 to 3 times a week crush tests faster

• Improves Sleep: Quieting down the nervous system knocks you out fast. A fully recharged brain retains

data and information 10x better.

Aquatic movement and Ai Chi

Teaching various groups across the island in Ai Chi - including at Les Quennevais Pool, Aquasplash, and Radisson Hotel pool at Bluwave Gym - we can also offer private sessions on request - Ai Chi really is a wonderful and theraputic form of exercise for both body and mind.

Derived from traditional Tai Chi - but performed in warm, shallow water - this exercise is ideal for those suffering from pain, recovering from injury or illness and really works wonders.

Client comments include ‘ I love it!’ -’Your Ai Chi classes are the one time in the week when I feel graceful.’

Mont a L’ Abbe secondary school loved the aquatic class.

Classes in nature - supporting nature

At The Yoga Initiative we strongly embrace our natural surroundings.

Our favourite ‘gym’ is one of our stunning Jersey beaches - where the children can breathe in our fresh sea air as they practice their Pranayama - and they can dig their toes into the sand to help ground them and to give balance.

We teach monthly Little Beans Yoga sessions in the stunning grounds of the Frances Le Suer Centre at St Ouens Bay -

Dates are the following :

Friday September 18th - morning

Friday October 30th - morning

Saturday November 21st - morning

Friday December 11th - morning

*** We are collaborating with National Trust Jersey on October 3rd offering a Seaside Ramble and Stretch at their new Greve de Lecq - booking highly recommended!

****When not in nature we make our classes accessible for all by being centrally located and are thrilled to be offering monthly sessions at the fabulous womens wellbeing hub at Eve Studios in the Royal Square, St Helier.

Kat is a qualified yoga instructor, fitness instructor, Ai Chi instructor, Aqua Yoga instructor and holistic therapist.

She is also a mother to three incredible children, ages 9 to 18, who all have their own unique qualities. One child was born with cognitive and physical problems, classed as quadrapalaegic aged 1 and whom has said 5 words in her whole life -yet who aged 13 learnt to find her balance and to take independent steps, and who now loves walking in the sea and also paddleboarding with help. Anything is possible with the right coaching and a positive mindset!

This life experience and lived in knowledge of all abilities and qualities of children and young people from babies to adulthood is the core of The Yoga Initiative CI (Yog-I).

We know how important it is to stay both mentally and physically strong - and we know how this resilience and positive mindset benefits the lives of young people in so many.

This holistic - all encompassing approach - is the backbone to our teaching.

Teaching yoga since qualifying as a Yogi of the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre in 2005, setting up a bilingual yoga studio in the French Alps after living, working and snowboarding with friends who were the worlds top skiers and snowboarders - and then doing some buddy work and yoga training with the British Adaptive ski team beforesetting up the first beach yoga classes here in Jersey means that we have taught people of all ages and abilities. Returning to live in our beautiful Jersey and developing more teaching skills and empathetic skills whilst being a volunteer and aid with Jersey Special Gymnastics and Riding for the Disabled and working alongside all ages and abilities of children in schools as well - we offer empathy and support for all children.

We will help navigate sustainable paths of health and fitness - sustainable being the key.

Kat’s approach is both professional and nurturing, creating a safe space for children and adolescents to move, heal and thrive.

Classes are held at Little Oaks nursery, Active - Les Quennevais Sports Centre, Radisson Bluwave gym, Eve Studios, Frances Le Suer Centre, and various outdoor locations.
